Introduction to the Open Water Course
The Open Water Course is the entry-level program for anyone interested in scuba diving. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of diving, including equipment use, underwater safety, and basic diving techniques. Designed for beginners, it equips you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to start exploring the underwater world safely and confidently.

Training Components and Practical Experience
The course includes both theoretical learning and practical training. You’ll start with classroom sessions or online modules to understand diving principles, followed by confined water training in a controlled environment such as a pool. Here, you’ll practice key skills like buoyancy control and mask clearing. Once you’re comfortable, you’ll proceed to open water dives where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in real dive conditions under the supervision of our certified instructors.
Certification and Future Opportunities
Upon successful completion of the Open Water Course, you’ll receive a certification that qualifies you to dive independently in various environments. This certification is internationally recognized and provides a solid foundation for further diving adventures. With this qualification, you’re ready to explore new dive sites and pursue advanced diving courses to deepen your underwater experience.
The Open Water Course in Details
The Open Water course is the first level of scuba certification, and will teach you everything you need to know to become an independent diver. Once you complete the course you will be qualified to dive independently (with a buddy), to a maximum depth of 18m/60ft, and your certification never expires.
The course usually takes 4 days to complete, each day split between classroom and in-water practice. The theory consists of 5 Knowledge Development sections (video, book chapter, and Knowledge Review questions).
You will begin the in-water training with shallow-water skills practice (called Confined Water dives), the first of which will be in water shallow enough to stand up in, progressing to slightly deeper (~2m) water to complete the rest of the skills. There will be 4 Open Water training dives done from the boat; the first 2 at a maximum depth of 12m/40ft, the last 2 at a maximum depth of 18m/60ft. During the dives you will practice some of the skills you already learned in the Confined Water sessions, work on buoyancy and swimming techniques, and discover the beautiful marine life of Utila’s coral reef.
